It can be easy to get stuck in the everyday routine of life; to feel as if you are going through the motions instead of being an active participant in your life. Often, when this happens, it can be helpful to add a little bit of variety to your day. This can be done in several ways, but today we are going to focus on how to shake up your routine by adding in a little more joy.
- Be more intentional with your day: if you feel as if you are just going through the motions, or are running on autopilot, it might be because you have stopped being intentional with your day. Plan for your day ahead of time and schedule things that bring you joy. This can be self-care, time with friends, calling a parent or something simple; such as stopping at your favorite coffee shop before work.
- Life Balance: establishing life balance is a great way to make time for the things you value, find meaning in and bring you joy. If you are spending too much time in one or two domains of life, and neglecting others, try to establish more balance in your day to day life. Some of the domains of life include me time, community, social life, romance, hobbies, exercise, career, spirituality, and family. Reflect on what your values are and ask yourself if your life honors these values. If not, maybe it’s time for a few changes.
- Add More Adventure: you do not have to travel or take time off work to have adventure in your life. Make it a goal to try something new once a week. Here are some ideas: walk a different route, go to a new restaurant, listen to a new band, talk to someone new or try a new recipe. Is there one thing that you have always wanted to do, or wished you had the courage and confidence to do? This is the week to do it!
- Random Acts of Kindness: when we do something nice for someone else, we often experience our own boost in happiness. Try to do something nice for someone else once a day or once a week. You can make it as simple or as elaborate as you want. This will help bring meaning and purpose into your daily life and, therefore, increase happiness.
